WCW Souled Out 2000 Review

I just finished watching this event, & it was wild, this was Vince Russo booking at it’s most chaotic.

The event had to be drastically altered, due to injuries & the subsequent retirement of Bret Hart & injuries to Jeff Jarrett leading to both the World Heavyweight & United States Heavyweight championships both being vacated.

The main event match was changed from Bret Hart vs. Sid Vicious for the World Heavyweight Championship to Sid vs. Chris Benoit for the title. And the Triple Threat Theatre between Chris Benoit & Jeff Jarrett for the United States Heavyweight Championship was changed to Kidman vs. Dean Malenko, Kidman vs. Perry Saturn & Kidman vs a Mystery opponent & the 6-man tag between The Filthy Animals & The Revolution was also changed to the Triple Threat Theatre. During the pre show, The Revolution attacked members of The Filthy Animals leading to Kidman being the only one not injured.

This event also served as the last appearances in WCW for Chris Benoit, Perry Saturn & Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero made his last appearance earlier in the week…

The first match of the evening was Kidman vs. Dean Malenko in what was supposed to be a dungeon match, instead it was a Catch As Catch Can match…

This match contained the biggest botch of all time, the match ended way earlier than it was supposed to. Dean Malenko forget the rules of the match which stipulated the match must remain in the ring, if either man rolled to the outside the match would end. 30 seconds into the match, Malenko rolls outside, leaving referee Charles Robinson no choice but to call the match.

Your winner: Kidman…

The next match is a 3 Way dance between Vampiro vs. David Flair vs. Crowbar.

Before the match, Scott Hudson tries to interview Vampiro only to be interrupted by Masahiro Chono

This match was a wild clusterfuck of a match, as overbooked as overbooked can get.

Daffney plays heavily into this match.

Vampiro wins by pin fall after hitting The Nail In The Coffin pile driver on David Flair…

Tag Team Match:

The Mamalukes (Big Vito & Johnny The Bull) w/ Disco Inferno vs. The Harris Boys (Ron & Don)

Mean Gene interviews The Mamalukes who are joined by Tony Maranara who says he has business to attend to. Disco Inferno doesn’t look too pleased.

The crowd totally shits on this match, chanting ‘Boring’ during several spots.

The Mamalukes win by pin fall after Disco inadvertently helps Big Vito hit a top rope clothesline for the victory

There is a backstage segment between WCW Cruiserweight Champion Madusa & Spice.

WCW Cruiserweight Championship match

Oklahoma vs. Madusa w/Spice (c)

Oklahoma wins the title after a sloppy roll up.

After the match Madusa pours barbecue sauce down Oklahoma’s tights…

Mean Gene interviews Hardcore Champion Brian Knobs. Knobs says he’ll beat his teacher Fit Finlay into a coma tonight.

‘4 The Hard Way’ Fatal 4-Way Match For The WCW Hardcore Championship.

Brian Knobs (c) vs. Screamin’ Norman Smiley vs. Fit Finlay vs. Meng.

A wild brawl.

Brian Knobs retains by pin fall after hitting Norman Smiley with a police shield.

Triple Threat Theatre:

Bunkhouse Brawl:

Kidman vs. Perry Saturn

Bunkhouse Brawl is basically an anything goes falls count anywhere in the arena…

Both men go back & forth early, before Saturn begins to dominate…

Lots of counters in this match…

Kidman wins by pin fall in the middle of the ring after countering a power bomb into a version of the X-Factof…

This was Kidman’s 2nd match, he has one more left…

They cut to a video package of Stevie Ray going back to his ‘hood in Harlem, New York. He says BooKer T. forgot where he came from…

Booker T. vs. Stevie Ray…

Booker T. enters first with Midnjght, & both men enter to the same music…

As the match begins, Booker send Midnight back stage…

Booker T. Wins by disqualification after hitting The Book End and Big T. (Ahmed Johnson) attacks Booker T.

Both Stevie Ray & Big T. attack Booker…

Mean Gene interviews Sid Vicious, Sid promises ‘a hell of a war…’ between him & Benoit later in the show…

Shoot Fighting match:

Tank Abbott vs. Jerry Flynn

Not much of a match, just a brawl with both men using submission moves.

Tank Abbott wins by knockout after punching Flynn in the back of the head…

Last Man Standing Match:

Diamond Dallas Page vs. Buff Bagwell…

This match goes all over…

Kimberly comes to ringside…

Buff Bagwell wins after Pagr hits a Diamond Cutter but for some reason, it’s Page who fails to answer the 10 count.

Page attacks Bagwell after the match…

Triple Threat Theatre:

Caged Heat Match (Hell In A Cell Steel Cage Natch)

Kidman vs. A Mystery Opponent…

Kidman enters first.

Shane Douglas comes out & addresses the crowd & introduces The Wall as Kidman’s opponent…

Kidman shows amazing strength by executing a top rope sunset flip power bomb on The Wall…

The Wall wins by pin fall after countering a too rope move into a choke slam.

It’s worth noting that this was Kidman’s 3rd match if the evening…

Co-Main Event:

Hardcore Match To Determine Who Will Be WCW Commissioner…

Kevin Nash vs. Terry Funk…

Bash power bombs Funk through the announce table.

Funk is a bloodied mess after this.

Nash cuts a promo in the ring saying if Funk can crawl back to the ring, Nash will let him continue to be commissioner.

Funk returns to the ring, but Nash said he lied…

Nash wins by pin fall to become commissioner after power bombing Funk through 3 steel chairs.

Main event;

For the vacant WCW World Heavyweight Championship:

Sid Vicious vs. Chris Benoit

Arn Anderson to be special referee…

Bad camera work as they catch Sid mouthing what moves to do to Benoit…

The entire locker room empties out to watch this match…

Sid is often seen looking yo to the entrance ramp…

Sid hits a choke slam and goes for the pin but Benoit’s foot is under the rooe…

Benoit counters a power bomb attempt in the Crippler Cross Facd, Sid immediately taps, despite his foot also being under the bottom rope…

Benoit is Heavyweight Champion…

After the match, Benoit thanks Sid for a good match. Arn Anderson congratulates Benoit & Nash warns Benoit…

It’s worth noting that the next night on Nitro, the title is vacant again after Benoit walks out in WCW & he along with Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn & Eddie Guerrero all sign with WWE. (Originally Shane Douglas was supposed to join them buy WWE had no interest in signing Douglas…)

This event was bad, just bad, bad bad!

Vjnce Russo at his worst…

The reviews continue later this week as I review WWF Royal Rumble 2009

I’m Steve & I’m out
